Rock Art Research & Art History Home 1999 North America Journal

Introduction

29 June 2002

The following pages are excerpts from a daily journal I kept during a five week tour of North American rock art sites. In addition to rock art, I also visited a few earthworks and participated in the 1999 International Rock Art Congress (Ripon, Wisconsin). Originally I had only planned to attend the Congress and spend a few weeks in Utah studying Barrier Canyon Style rock art sites. When I realized that my forthcoming Ph.D. research would probably keep me in Brazil for the next few summers, I decided to drive from Virginia to Wisconsin and Utah (rather than fly to each separately) and catch as much rock art as possible along the way. It was sort of an introduction to the diversity of North American rock art, and a temporary farewell to it at the same time.

Thanks to contacts I made through the Rock-Art Discussion and Information ListServ, to information I found through web searches and of course through many hours in the library, I was able to fill five weeks with some very interesting things to do. I ended up visiting over forty sites in nine states.

Regions discussed in this journal

This journal is not a scholarly publication by any means. The more "scholarly" observations (speculations) will be reserved for reviewed publications. There are unpublished sites I will not include, and some I will not identify in any detail apart from a photograph. The reasons for this should be obvious to serious researchers. For the casual visitor to this site, I am too concerned with the preservation of the sites or have agreed to keep certain information restricted. I will not provide a "traveller's guide" to each and every location. There are enough here that are open to the public to keep everyone happy and I will be glad to answer any questions I can; just email me.
