Making Marks:
Graduate Studies in Rock Art
Research at the New Millennium
Edited by Jennifer K. K. Huang
and Elisabeth V. Culley, with an
introduction by Marvin W. Rowe

The 21st century marks an important shift in archaeologists' attention to prehistoric art. Recently, the annual meetings of the Society for American Archaeology have included multiple symposia dedicated to rock art research, indicating the discipline's recognition of prehistoric art as an important and viable research domain. Of particular note was a series of symposia highlighting student contributions to rock art research.

These contributions reflected the future of the subdiscipline and include theoretical, empirical, and interpretive approaches to rock art production, chronology, style, and meaning. The organizers and participants of these symposia were committed to the publication of their work in a comprehensive and edited volume in order to continue the discourse about, and research on, prehistoric imagery from around the world.

This volume, entitled Making Marks: Graduate Studies in Rock Art Research at the New Millennium, includes 17 papers initially presented at the Society for American Archaeology annual meetings, 2001-2003, and now greatly expanded. Topics of study include dating techniques, stylistic considerations, conservation efforts, and theoretical approaches, and they speak to disciplines such as archaeology, ethnology, art history, chemistry, museum studies and conservation, to name but a few. In addition, their geographical focuses are global, including North America, Central America, South America, Western Europe, South Africa and Australia.

Making Marks was both authored and edited by graduate students and offers a comprehensive look at academically rigorous research from around the globe - a glimpse at the future of the discipline.

The book is available for $20 at
